Lake Nicholas Plastiras

One of the largest artificial lakes in the country, inspiration and vision of N. Plastiras, was created in 1959. After the completion of the dam, the plateau of Nevropolis (in those times a fertile, arable valley) flooded by the waters of Tavropos creating a lake at an altitude of 800m and an area of 25000 acres.

From the restored watermill starts the path to Nine Vrises and the waterfalls of Anthochorion. About one kilometer of hiking in a natural landscape of unparalleled beauty, with view from above (1500m altitude).

The Nevropolis airport

During the period of the National Resistance at the bottom of the current lake operated the Nevropolis guerrilla nocturne airport of Nevropolis. Before the sunlight, rebels and residents of the area were hidding the runway using for camouflage transportable vegetation.

Madona of the Rocks

Panagia Pelekite - Sculpted on the steep slope of Agrafa

The monastery was hagiographed in the middle of the 17th century and consists of two churches, one of the Ascension of the Savior, with frescoes by 1654 and one dedicated to Panagia Faneromeni, with frescoes by 1666 with the miraculous icon of Panagia Pelekiti with Jesous in her arms.
It was burned by the Germans in 1943 whereas during the civil war there happened dreary events.

After the creation of the Greek state in 1931, Karytsa (the village under the monastery) and Belekomytis were found outside the Greek borders because they were determined on the river Karytsiotis whereas these two villages are after the river. Then the monks along with the inhabitants of the two villages arbitrarily moved the borders and placed them after the monastery on the plateau of Karamanlis.
